More Than 10% of Candidates Aced All the Subjects

The 2010 Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) results indicated a slight improvement this year compared with last year, with the overall national average grade increasing by 0.02 per cent, Education Director-General Datuk Abd Ghafar Mahmud exclaimed.

A total of 482,334 candidates sat for UPSR at 8,192 examination centres nationwide which was held from 21st to 23rd of September.

This year's Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) results saw 10.02% of candidates scoring straight As. Datuk Abdul Ghafar Mahmud said that a total of 48,327 of 482,334 UPSR candidates this year obtained all As as compared to 9.5% last year.

He added that national primary schools recorded 4.5% more As for Bahasa Melayu (Comprehension) this year, but saw a decline of As for Bahasa Melayu (Writing Skills) by 8.9%. Both national and vernacular schools saw an improvement in the English paper, recording a national average grade of 2.74 (from 2.79 last year) and 2.69 (from 2.8 last year).

Internet Users Debate on Level of Education Standard

Many internet users have voiced out their opinions regarding this issue. Internet user Nstman commented that the government lowered the level of standard set by them to ensure that more students could obtain more As and there are those who cannot even converse in simple English  or do not even know that difference between a verb and a noun yet miraculously score A in the English exam.

He also went on to say that the standard of education was much higher back in the sixties. While the standard of education is sliding by the day, the number of As keeps shooting up.

Internet users' comments on the issue.

To improve the standard of education in Malaysia is not as simple as just lowering its standard. Let's hope that next year's UPSR will see even better results from this year, but through proper and standardized marking system.
