First Time Participating Brings Gold for Student

Two young aspiring designers from The One Academy took part in the annual Junior Designer Awards (JDA) and snapped up two of the top three prized awarded in the national design competition organized by Malaysia's biggest interior design magazine publisher iN Publishers.

19-year-old interior design student Ong Su Ping walked home with RM3,000 cash prize for winning the Gold award. In recognition of her award-winning creation, Ong's unique lighting design of “The Dancer” will be made into one of the products to be sold in one of Malaysia's biggest lighting retail centre Alfo lighting.

“It was the first time I had taken part in a furniture design competition (or any interior design competition) and the win definitely boosted my confidence,” said Ong, who added that her design inspiration came from the silhouette of a dancer.

Bronze winner Eunice Ang Chia Sze also won herself a cash prize of RM1,000 and joined her course mate in the league to have her winning design produced for the commercial market. This was her second time participating in the annual Junior Designer Award.

“I was surprised to know that I still had the opportunity to take part in the JDA competition,” said the 20-year-old Ang, who is currently in her final semester year of Interior Design programming at The One Academy,  “It really gave me an extra boost of confidence in my work.”

On her winning design, Ang said that her work was meant to promote a message of environmental awareness. “Our earth is facing global warming as we know. Thus, I decided to spread the environmentally friendly 'Go Green' theme through my lighting design, inspired by the shape of twisted soft drink cans that is multifunctional at the same time.

According to Malaysia's renowned 'Raja Hias' celebrity interior designer and the head of interior design department Eric Leong, the competition aimed to encourage talented new designers to support new creation of product designs and expand the local design industry while strengthening Malaysian-made products and business competitiveness.

JDA unleashed the creative young talents and upcoming designers who are full of energies and desire to venture into the product design industry via the showcase of their fresh and innovative design ideas. The innovative and edgy young designers who stand out in the competition will grow into strong business and possess promising careers.
