By TAI POH YEE

The First in Kampar

The first McDonald’s Drive-Thru Restaurant in Mukim Kampar was opened on 14th October 2010, franchised by Golden Arches Restaurants Sdn. Bhd. This would be written in the history of Kampar after McDonald’s been so famous in Malaysia so many years. Many positive impacts would be on bringing in subsequently after the opening of the branch.

Franchise Opportunity of McDonald’s in Kampar

It’s been sometime since the Kampar Campus of Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) and Tunku Abdul Rahman College (TARC) has been open for pupils to pursue their undergraduate studies. This relocation strategy did brought a huge impact to the economy of Kampar. Well, at least the New Town of Kampar. Many new hawker stalls, shops and cafes have been newly founded around that area, which means the increase of student population had been giving the owner’s of Ronald McDonald’s Fast Food Company another thought of distributing a franchise opportunity for people to open a branch in Kampar.

UTAR Students Drive All the Way to Gopeng for McDonald’s Meal

Ever before the Kampar branch of McDonald’s was established, pupils from UTAR and TARC drive all the way from Kampar to Gopeng to enjoy the fast food service. The 40-minute single trip journey shows how passion they are upon the McDonald’s. They are more than happy to enjoy the foods available despite they have to suffer from time consuming and mentally and physically burn out.

People Shows Excitement Over the Banner Showed

When the notification banner was hung, people in Kampar who passed by it did made a lot of discussions among themselves. Peoples especially the students show a lot of anticipate on that as they would have a whole new spot for them to gather, to chill out, and to do revision and researches for their assignments.

UPSR 2010 Results See Improvement From Previous Year

By TEOH SHU CHYI

More Than 10% of Candidates Aced All the Subjects

The 2010 Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) results indicated a slight improvement this year compared with last year, with the overall national average grade increasing by 0.02 per cent, Education Director-General Datuk Abd Ghafar Mahmud exclaimed.

A total of 482,334 candidates sat for UPSR at 8,192 examination centres nationwide which was held from 21st to 23rd of September.

This year's Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) results saw 10.02% of candidates scoring straight As. Datuk Abdul Ghafar Mahmud said that a total of 48,327 of 482,334 UPSR candidates this year obtained all As as compared to 9.5% last year.

Proud: Abdul Ghafar holding a book containing the UPSR 2010
results after announcing the results in Putrajaya.

He added that national primary schools recorded 4.5% more As for Bahasa Melayu (Comprehension) this year, but saw a decline of As for Bahasa Melayu (Writing Skills) by 8.9%. Both national and vernacular schools saw an improvement in the English paper, recording a national average grade of 2.74 (from 2.79 last year) and 2.69 (from 2.8 last year).

Internet Users Debate on Level of Education Standard

Many internet users have voiced out their opinions regarding this issue. Internet user Nstman commented that the government lowered the level of standard set by them to ensure that more students could obtain more As and there are those who cannot even converse in simple English  or do not even know that difference between a verb and a noun yet miraculously score A in the English exam.

He also went on to say that the standard of education was much higher back in the sixties. While the standard of education is sliding by the day, the number of As keeps shooting up.

Internet users' comments on the issue.

To improve the standard of education in Malaysia is not as simple as just lowering its standard. Let's hope that next year's UPSR will see even better results from this year, but through proper and standardized marking system.

The flood in Kedah claimed its first victim after an elderly German woman was reported missing when flashflood hit her son's bungalow in Kampung Kota Giam, Malau. Erna Fischer, 64, was swept away by strong water current after the flood hit the village in the 8pm incident. Together with her son, Yusof Abdullah, 41, and his wife, Ashalehah Zain, 40, Fischer had earlier rushed out of the bungalow when they noticed the floodwater was fast inundating the double-storey building. The couple was swept away for about 300 metres before they managed to grab a tree each. They clung on to the tree for almost three hours before they were rescued by Tenaga Nasional Bhd workers and members of the civil defense corp. Ashalelah later told reporters she could only watch helplessly as the strong water currents swept her mother-in-law into the dark night. Fischer's body had yet to be found.

Anti-WarisanMerdeka on Facebook

By WONG TAI YUEN

Warisan Merdeka Turns Out a Hot Topic

The 100-storey WarisanMerdeka Skyscraper announced during the 2011 Budget speech has become a subject for the citizen and Internet user.During the 2011 Budget speech yesterday, Datuk Seri NajibTunRazak announced that five-billion Ringgit Malaysia would be allocated for building a 100-storey mega building in the city of Kuala Lumpur near Merdeka Stadium. This matter however, turns out to be a hot topic to citizen of the country as well as users in Facebook, a popular social networking site.

1M Malaysians Reject 100-storey Mega Tower on Facebook

An anti-WarisanMerdeka page on Facebok with the name of “1M Malaysians Reject 100-storey Mega Tower” has been signing up fans at an astounding rate of over one-thousand per hour yesterday. It had breached over 50-thousand fans in less than 12 hours since the page was created and it has reached 240-thousand fans now.

A Facebook user NazriAhtar said that it is better to spend the money in other division such as education, technology and living environment rather than having the tallest building in the world.

"Jalanrayakatcherasni pun byk yang berlobang, traffic light rosak x repair, bas tak cukup, laginakbuatmenarani, gila ape? selamatmenderitarakyatmalaysia....(The roads in Cheras are full of potholes, broken traffic lights are not repaired, insufficient buses, and you still want to build this tower, are you crazy? Happy suffering citizens of Malaysia….)” wrote another Facebook user MuhamadRais. The project is also ahot topic in Twitter with many questioning the need for the tower and its implications on traffic in an already heavily congested city.

A Facebook user commenting on the anti-WarisanMerdeka page on Facebook

This issue has also affected the citizen’s confident towards the government. “ To be a progressive country, we need to reform our economy and vanish corruption not just making another skyscraper and hope that money will come rolling in the pocket. We must think wiser now or our country will be left behind. The Government must aware of rakyat’s hardship and miseries, Rakyat also serves the right and we can change you by our voting power. Beware!!” Wrote by MohamadAfifuddin on the 1M Malaysians Reject 100-storey Mega Tower page.

However, some who supported the project say that it will have a positive effect on the country’s economy as it will boost tourism, create jobs opportunity, stimulate economic activity and raise land vaue prices in the vicinity.

“Look at Shanghai, they started with a tower and keep adding more, the same goes for Taipei,” said Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Ng Yen Yen.

At the end, it all comes back to the same question, do Malaysia really need to have the building and is it appropriate to do it now?

By LIM PIK NGAN

Lee Chong Wei wins gold, beat Rajiv Ouseph

Datuk Lee Chong Wei won the gold medal in the men's singles badminton at the 2010 Commonwealth Games (CWG). "Although I am No. 1 in the world, I couldn't have missed the games because the country needed the medal," said Lee. This prove him the only the second player to make a successful defence of the Commonwealth men's singles title, his compatriot Rashid Sidek doing so in 1994. Lee's victory was cheered by the Indian spectators who did not want England to win any more medals so that India could finish second in the medals tally at the games.
